SHREM'S SPECIAL: THE RETURN OF THE BIG BALLAD [Juliette Armanet + M83 feat. Susanne Sundfør + Kadhja Bonet]

Very unlike the sounds you normally find on my carousel of tunes, I'd like to dedicate this special one-off post to the good old-fashioned ballads. All three tracks I have selected for you are actually new but they're all paying exquisite homages to the golden eras of 1970's and 80's song-writing and balladry. Epic, big, irresistibly melodic and charmingly kitschy these 3 gems will take you on a bizarrely sentimental journey.

I have first come across Juliette Armanet on "Colette French Kiss" - jewel of a compilation, filled with up and coming French talents. Armanet's delicious slice of electro pop "L'amour en Solitaire", produced by the mighty Yuksek, was an instant favourite. Now the Parisian Pop mermaid returns, beguiling us with her angelic voice even more, with a Chanson Française à la vintage "Manque d'amour" which announces the release of her brand new EP "Cavalier Seule". This classic French Pop composition with subtle yet sumptuous production left me astounded. Françoise Hardy meets Air.

M83's latest album "Junk" seems to have divided not only their fanbase but the whole blogosphere. I have been completely enchanted by its concept and spectacular guest appearances. While "Time Wind" featuring Beck may be the catchiest moment on the entire album it's the magnificent collaboration with Norway's prime synth-pop diva Susanne Sundfør that stole the show for me. Accompanied by Sundfør's flawless vocal performance, the saxophone laden, wondrously camp "For The Kids" really does reminisce some obscure 80's lost classics. Irresistibly nostalgic and intentionally tacky.

"Remember The Rain" is a marvellous, richly arranged ballad from Los Angeles jazz vocalist Kadhja Bonet. The self-released single brought back some 70's vibes, intricate and generous string arrangements, timeless key changes and sophisticated melody hooks, delicately echoing Barbra Streisand's "Woman In Love". Heavenly.

SHREM'S DOUBLE TROUBLE: "WORKS FOR YOU" - Σtella /// "SECRET IN THE DARK (Juan MacLean Edit)" - Monika

I have two very promising contemporary Greek artists for you today. Athens based pop singer-songwriter Stella Chronopoulou aka Σtella  releases the instantly charming and wonderfully retro "Works For You", co-produced by NTEIBINT who was already joining musical efforts with Stella before on "The Owner". The flawlessly produced single, emphasising the good old-fashioned pop melodies, is taken off her upcoming sophomore album scheduled for later on this year via Inner Ear Records.

The other Greek diva Monika Christodoulou caught our attention last year with a bona fide modern disco anthem "Secret In The Dark" and the indisputable legacy of this indie classic lives on with an electrifying re-edit of the track by DFA's disco aficionado The Juan MacLean. Sounding like a perfect bridge between late 70's Demis Roussos and Midnight Magic, "Secret In The Dark" sounds like an authentic Studio 54 lost gem.

CHOON OF THE DAY: "NAVY & CREAM" - U.S. Girls

U.S. Girls, the most captivating of all artists currently residing at 4AD - "the record label that gave birth to indie cool", released her curiously eclectic "Half Free" album last year. Following the stream of immersive singles promoting the album "Damn That Valley", "Woman's Work" and "Window Shades" Megan Remy continues to inspire with "Navy & Cream" a song which balances between the wall of industrial electro sound and her very own experimental definition of Pop music in the same time. One of a kind.

SHREM'S WORLDLY DELIGHTS: "ENTA ARABI" - Kabreet

Continuing my New Year's resolution about posting more songs from the lesser explored corners of the musical world, I give you this truly captivating recording from the Berlin based Yemeni/German duo Kabreet. "Enta Arabi" comes from Ibi Ibrahim & Hanno Stecher's freshly released debut album "Momken Bokra" which you can stream and purchase on Bandcamp. The elegant composition mixes some traditional Arabic instruments with minimal electronica in a subtle way. With its understated melody, nostalgic vocals and the unquestionably melodic aspect of the al-ʿArabiyyah, "Enta Arabi" is a real treat not only for those already partial to Middle Eastern sounds.

Here's the video for the equally seductive title track taken from Kabreet's first LP:

SHREM'S DOUBLE TROUBLE: "IN MY GARDEN" - Invisible Cities /// "THE HARDEST THING TO DO" -Tony Primo & Nixxie

There were two rather low-key, surprising releases last year where 2 female artists I cherish immensely, got involved in mysterious, collaborative efforts under disguises.

Róisín Murphy provided breathy, sensual vocals for "In The Garden" released by Luca C & Brigante's side project  Invisible Cities. The sublime deep house track leaves the Irish chanteuse uncredited making it a particularly attractive addition to every Róisín Murphy completist's collection.

"The Hardest Thing To Do" was recorded for Ariel Kleiman's debut feature film "Partisan". This 1980's flavoured synth-pop jewel is a joint effort between Joseph Mount from Metronomy and Robyn under the alias Tony Primo & Nixxie. Nostalgic and wonderfully catchy the song sounds like a genuine, lost classic from the era.

Two hidden gems.

Here's "The Hardest Thing To Do" as used in "Partisan":

SHREM'S DOUBLE TROUBLE: "EVERYTHING NICE" - Jaakko Eino Kalevi feat. Farao /// "BE MINE (Jaakko Eino Kalevi Remix)" - Alice Boman

January is an odd month in music year in, year out. A slight stagnation on the new releases front, as if most artists were going into short-term hibernation, cooling off after December's marathon of year end charts and before everything kicks in again in February. It is also a month of discovering all those hidden gems musos might have missed out on throughout the previous year. Our favourite Finnish artist - Jaakko Eino Kalevi teamed up with Farao last autumn to cover Popcaan's dancehall hit "Everything Nice" and turned it into a wondrous neo-folk-meets-synth-pop lushness and this one-off release completely slipped under my radar. I thought it'd be fitting to pair "Everything Nice" with Kalevi's enthralling remix of Alice Boman's "Be Mine" which I have already been singing the praises of, listing it among the Top 20 Greatest Remixes of 2015, but never actually dedicated a single post to. Don't these two sound rather magical back to back?

SHREM'S WORLDLY DELIGHTS: "GECƏLƏR KEÇIR" - DiHaj

To keep the sounds eclectic and unpredictable I am initiating the 7th year of my über-nerdy blogging with this popular Azerbaijani folk song "Gecələr Keçir" re-arranged to a modern note with an Orient scented electronic production. Diana Hajiyeva is a Jazz singer from Baku who teamed up with 2 musical compatriots Anar and Ali for a side project DiHaj. I have always had a soft spot for the Central Asian sounds and "Gecələr Keçir" seems like a pretty perfect fusion of the two artistic worlds I enjoy as a music geek. One of my new year's resolutions for SHREM'S CAROUSEL OF ÜBER NERDINESS is to research and share sounds from lesser known corners of the globe so here's DiHaj to revive this little "Worldly Delights" thread of mine.

SHREM'S BIGGIES BUT GOODIES BASKET: "CALM DOWN" - Katy B, Four Tet & Floating Points

What a divine musical combo. A collaboration like no other. Katy B whose vocals proudly feature on this year's sole quality UK Chart #1 (the ubiquitous "Turn The Music Louder (Rumble)" with KDA and Tinie Tempah) teams up surprisingly with two cult producers Four Tet and Floating Points for a track that already sounds like Katy B's most ambitious single to date. The flawless string-laden production, the seductive vocals wrapped around a subtle melody and the inescapable beat makes "Calm Down" an immediate favourite. Katy B loves spoiling us with those unannounced "out-of-nowhere" surprise singles. "Calm Down" repeats the same trick as the phenomenal "Aaliyah" with Jessie Ware which was released in December 2012 and then again "Crying For No Reason" the very first great single of 2014. I am just glad I haven't started my "2015 Countdown of Choons" yet as "Calm Down" will most certainly make the final cut.

Official press release:

"In collaboration with Four Tet and Floating Points, Katy B reveals "Calm Down", the first piece of music taken from her new project entitled "Honey" that will see Katy teaming up with a number of producers and artists, further exemplifying Katy’s ability to push boundaries and create exciting new music. Expect more details of "Honey" to follow in the new year."

CHOON OF THE DAY: "FOREST ROADSIDE" - Thomas Gaist

I have had a soft spot for this Danish underground crooner since the very first time Sound of Copenhagen introduced me to his Bowie-esque otherwordly masterpiece "Blue Bird" he'd released under the disguise of Thom Catt. Rather than chasing any musical trends or fashions, or following any sonic conventions Thomas Gaist chooses to go his own, truly individual artistic path denying any genre or style-categorisation. The artist's first proper single "A Coward's Confession" was one of the most mesmerising songs that emerged in 2015 and now the curiously talented and ever so slightly mysterious Dane beguiles us with "Forest Roadside" - a low-key yet enthralling slice of electronic folk filled with classical guitar and low frequency electronic drums, Björk's "Headphones" style. No other male vocalist, bar Jaakko Eino Kalevi and Shaun J. Wright, kept me so intrigued this year. I am once again truly stunned by your sounds Mr Gaist.
