SHREM'S CLUB BIZARRE INTRODUCING: "SMELL EP" - Femme En Fourrure

Finnish duo Femme En Fourrure intrigue me more and more with every next release, kaleidoscopically balancing between genres, styles and moods, they never fail to surprise. The latest offering from Juuso Malin and Sandra Tervonen is "Smell EP" consisting of 3 brand new excellent tracks with a remix by Inga Copeland. Layers of cold, crystal clear synths, distorted vocals, Fever Ray-esque vibes, broken beats and Femme en Fourrure's signature otherworldly production is what makes this EP such an exciting aural escapade. I've had "Shores" and 'Blossom" on repeat all morning.

"Smell EP" is available now on a very limited 10" clear vinyl and cassette at the Helsinkian band's official store.

CHOONS OF THE DAY: "ALCHEMY" + "BLACK SCORPIO" - TĀLĀ

Last night Aesop shared the official video for TĀLĀ's mesmerising new single "Alchemy" which matched the utter-brilliance of her epic "Serbia" earlier on this year. Video by Studio Moross.

CHOON OF THE DAY: "FLAME" - Ronya + Femme En Fourrure Remix

Ronya comes Helsinki and fits perfectly into the recent craze around all the ethereal synth-pop serving Scandinavian sirens the likes of Jonna Lee from Iamamiwhoami, Lykke Li, MØ, Kill J or Planningtorock. Her latest single "Flame" is out now via Cocoa Music. The song's instantly appealing catchiness is slightly disturbed by the real hero of this release which is a deliciously hypnotic remix provided by Ronya's compatriots, our favourite Finnish noir electronica specialists from Femme En Fourrure. Between all the distorted vocals, tribal beats, echoey sounds and almost medieval elements towards the end it's like a fascinating sonic journey from early Dead Can Dance stuff from the 80's to Fever Ray's unparalleled debut album. All in 5 minutes of one of the greatest remixes released in 2014 so far...

I must admit I have never heard of Twigs, or shall I say the artist formerly known as Twigs, until this week. All of a sudden a few of my muso friends whose tastes in music I always trust, started obsessively sharing this video. Strange I remained so completely oblivious to this extraordinary singer for that long. Anyhow here's "Water Me" one of the most unique, mind-blowing recordings I heard all year. Beautifully bizarre, hypnotically gripping, both visually and sonically astounding. Produced by Arca, the transcendent "Water Me" announces Twigs' EP2 out 9th September via Young Turks. I am in awe...

CHOON OF THE DAY: "PHOENIX" - Kill J

Ok so what we know about the mysterious Kill J so far is as follows. She's Danish. She has the most unusual haircut since Jay Jay Johanson in his "Antenna" hey-days. She has a "one in a million" kind of voice with a goosebumps-causing vibrato. Her first song "Phoenix" sounds like the most sophisticated, the most subtle and the most intriguing 3 minutes of music released so far during this magnificently fruitful year that is 2013.

SHREM'S CLUB BIZARRE INTRODUCING: "WATCHER" - Femme En Fourrure

This oniric piece of electronica comes from Helsinki and it's far from being an idyllic ambient moment. Instead it draws you into an unexplored mélange of fascinating if slightly disconcerting soundscapes that lie somewhere between Angelo Badalamenti's soundtracks for David Lynch classics, 4AD vibe of the 1980's releases by Cocteau Twins and spoken word recordings by the likes of Vanessa Daou or recently Catalan duo Jansky. Both versions of "Watcher" are available now on Femme En Fourrure's album "36-26-36" out now via Convex Industries.

SHREM'S CLUB BIZARRE INTRODUCING: "INTRODUCTION" - CREEP feat. Planningtorock

I was thrilled to find out the Brooklyn based witch house pioneers CREEP have just announced some rather promising details on "Echoes", their most anticipating full-length debut album to drop 13th August. Lauren Dillard and Lauren Flax continue their extraordinary conceptual musical journey by inviting different vocalists for each of the songs on the album, just like they did with the staggering series of singles that were released so far: "Days" with Romy Madley Croft from The XX, "You" with Nina Sky, "Animals" with Holly Miranda and "Call Her" with Tricky and Alejandra de la Deheza. The introduction to "Echoes" comes with aptly titled opening track "Introduction" featuring the uncompromising Planningtorock, CREEP's possibly darkest moment to date. A truly fascinating act and with the increasing excitement around them since 2010 I am beside myself thinking about this record to be finally out.

SHREM'S CLUB BIZARRE INTRODUCING: "HOME" - Austra

"Home" by Austra sounds like it has the very same odd potential to be turned into an absolute house anthem if approached by some clever dj, just like Moloko's album version of "Sing It Back" back in 1998 when remixed by Boris Dlugosch. I mean it's inevitable right? Am I going bananas or that piano echoes some big house records of the past. The single is a delectable teaser before Austra's "Olympia" gets released in mid June via Domino Records. Together with "Painful Like" which emerged in live version in August 2012 I'm guessing we may be up for a real treat in the shape of Toronto sextet's best work to date...

CHOON OF THE DAY: "CALL HER" - CREEP feat. Tricky & Alejandra de la Deheza

It's hard to believe it's already almost a year since we heard from CREEP the last time. "Call Her" is a follow-up to the duo's last single "Animals" which featured Holly Miranda. This time around the Brooklyn girls invited trip-hop veteran Tricky and a fairly unknown vocalist Alejandra de la Deheza from School of Seven Bells. Really hope 2013 will finally see the release of CREEP's long anticipated debut album.

Do you remember "En Enda Röst"? A fascinatingly dark piece of Swedish witch house that didn't quite sound like anything else in 2011? Well Det lilla extra, the enigmatic act from Umeå, has just posted another utterly magnificent piece composed around their very own recipe of mixing Balearic, dub and electronica. I feel bewitched. CHOON OF THE DAY: "LOFTICRIES" - Purity Ring

Purity Ring's "Shrines" seems to be an inexhaustible source of treasures both sonically and visually. Montreal duo has just treated us to yet another video this year to one of the stand-out tracks on their mesmerising debut album. I simply adore Megan James' voice and when it comes to electronica and alternative pop scene of the past 2 years at least, Canadians really do it better. Gem!

SHREM'S CLUB BIZARRE PRESENTS: "KILL ME" - The Golden Filter + Remixes

The Golden Filter's soporific "Kill Me" somehow slipped through my radar despite of its powerful video and a set of absolutely amazing remixes. The following two renditions of the track by the Danish/Iranian duo Rosemary and Belgian Fusty Delights have just found a solid spot among the best mixes I heard this year so far. It's a sonic feast of sublime, sombre and eerily beautiful soundscapes. I am rather intrigued to see the the NYC duo perform at this year's Lovebox Festival in London.

2012 has been incredible for singles and EPs so far. Things don't seem so rosey when it comes to full albums, not yet anyway... There's been only one definite candidate for the album of the year and that's Grimes' mesmerising "Visions". Here are my two personal favourite songs off this breakthrough mélange of inclassifiable quirky soundscapes. Exactly how many new Canadian talents are there? I'm in awe...
