Crème de la crème: JANUARY 2010

In the speed of light we're at the end of the first month of 2010 already. Here's top 20 of the month according 2 my tri-weekly personal charts. As it always happens 2 me in January, it includes some tunes that I have missed out on the previous year and some that only appeared in December and still make my ears smile:-)

20- YOU'LL DISAPPEAR (Munk Remix) - Phenomenal Handclap Band - thank you's go 2 "Tutriziro Recordings", danced 2 it a dozen of times around the coffee table in my living room;-)

19- FEEL IT ALL AROUND - Washed Out - kinda not very "me" type of a song, intriguing and haunting Air-esque landscapes

18- NEVER STOP BELIEVING (Munk Club Edit) - The KDMS Feat. Kathy Diamond - Brighton's nu disco queen & her new project

17- JOURNAL OF ARDENCY - Class Actress - like my favourite music geek Piotrek once said, this is what GLASS CANDY would sound like if Ida No was dragged off the stage by FEIST...

16- DON'T STOP - Annie - Bergen's finest and the title track from her 2nd pure-pop-perfection album

15- ONE LIFE STAND - Hot Chip - catchy catchy catchy by the masters of always the bestest first singles

14- ROCKET - Goldfrapp - the ROCKET will properly explode next month, can't wait 4 the video. Alison Goldfrapp goes Van Halen in the discoteka:-)

13- F*** SONG - Cassian

12- SHAMELESS - Groove Armada Feat. Bryan Ferry

11- MY FANTASY - Sally Shapiro - italo disco norwegian style

10- ACAPELLA - Kelis - hard 2 believe this one was produced by David Guetta responsible for 2 out of last year's 3 worst singles!!!

09- LOOKING GLASS - Little Dragon - swedish sonic delicatessen with the wonderful YUKIMI NAGANO on vocals

08- THIN ICE - Gus Gus - video edit a perfect alternative 2 the 9 minutes long album electro-marathon

07- MOSES - Elizabeth Fraser - the ethereal and exquisite Miss Frazer, haven't been waiting 4 anybody's come back as much as 4 this one... Magical

06- GIRL I LOVE YOU (She Is Danger Remix) - Massive Attack Feat. Horace Andy - dubby yummy BLUE LINES updated 4 the new decade

05- LIVING WITHOUT YOUR LOVE - Walter Jones - delicate & groovy, excellent choice 4 both pre and after-party soundtrack

04- LOVE ME LIKE THIS - Floating Points - perfect bridge between 1980's rare grooves & deep house of 2day, shout-outs go 2 Darren, gracias amigo:-)

03- LOVE - Dj Cam Feat. Nicolette - the return of my personal favourite vocalist on DJ Cam's sensual and nu-jazzy epic new track

02- RECKLESS - Azari & III - good oldskool house anthem, nothing 2 add, impossible not 2 dance 2!

01- MOMMA'S PLACE - Róisín Murphy - kinda guessed it from the youtube clips last year of La Murphy using this tune during her dj sets, that it's going 2 be massive... And it certainly is, vintage house instant anthem, 14 times number 1 on my charts, 49 plays on my i-tunes not bad 4 a single that's only 3 weeks old. Basically it's your best 0.99 cent spent this month baby...

CHOON OF THE DAY: ROCKING CHAIR - Cyndi Lauper Feat. Basement Jaxx

What a smashing collaboration. Easily the best thing that happened 2 Lauper since the 80's. The shiniest jewel of a song on her latest LP "BRING YA TO THE BRING". And a wee dedication 2 my lovely Les... ♥

And it goes a little something like this:

Za va ba, za ba bi ya... ca va pas? za ba bi ya...
Romeo Boyz, they'll b dancing with the Cha Cha Girlz

SHREM'S INSTITUTE OF LOST CLASSICS PRESENTS... RUNAWAY - Deee Lite

Still indisputably the most important band of all in my books. The band that shaped my taste for music since late 80's till the very now. Been collecting Deee Lite's deee-licious releases through all those years. Here's one of their magical live performances. The ultra-cool RUNAWAY from their 2nd LP "INFINITY WITHIN". I adore everything about it. The musical arrangement, the choreography, the outfits and most of all Lady Miss Kier's sensational vocals.

HOW DO YOU SAY DEEE-LICIOUS, DEEE-LOVELY, DEEE-LECTABLE, DEEE-VINE?

How do you say deee-gorgeous, deee-groovy? How do you say DEEE-LITE?

SHREM'S INSTITUTE OF LOST CLASSICS PRESENTS... TONTON DU BLED - 113

I have discovered this tune years back hitchhiking through France with my friend Maciek. Arabic samples 2 die 4! By the way the name DJ MEHDI rings a bell? Well this is where he started his adventure with music making:

CHOON OF THE DAY: SHAMELESS - Groove Armada Feat. Bryan Ferry

Just weeks after unexpectedly joining forces with Berlin's enfant terrible of electro - Dj Hell - on his latest album, Bryan Ferry continues exploring the club scene of now with this haunting track from Groove Armada's upcoming LP "BLACK LIGHT". Music legends is the way 2 go 4 the Armada boys considering this is even better than their excellent collaboration with Candi Staton on their previous album. And Bryan's vocals sound ever so sexy, no surprise there...

DO YOU THINK YOU INVENTED BEING BAD?

LA REINE DU DISCO IS BACK!!! Ireland's finest Róisín Murphy has just released her brand new, instantly anthemic, 'put-your-hands-up-in-the-air' pure gem of a dancefloor filler. 90's r officially back in fashion big time!

The lyrics, the melody, the production and HERSELF! One of her strongest songs 2 date. And I'm saying it purely objectively not from 'La Murphy fanatic' point of view.

OUT ON I-TUNES 2DAY! Money well spent I promise.

3 IS THE MAGIC NUMBER

La Murphy and Polish Natalia Kukulska (party anthem chez moi!) both borrowing from Mary Jane Girls' ultra-groove-classic CANDY MAN from 1983. Am I the only one hearing the resemblances?

SHREM'S GUILTIEST OF PLEASURES... VOL.1

Praising the cheesiest, tackiest, campest, most "unacceptable" albums/songs from my music library. I just couldn't initiate "the kitsch thread" with any other title than Betty Boo's 2nd album... Bought it on cassette back in the day, managed 2 chase it down on cd and I'm still on the hunt for the LP :-)

GRRR! IT'S BETTY BOO - Betty Boo
Released 1992
FAVOURITE TRACKS: THING GOIN' ON (sampling Larry Young's Fuel), SKIN TIGHT, CLOSE THE DOOR (even Marysia loves that one!) and GAVE YOU THE BOO

10 GEMS YOU HAVE MOST PROBABLY MISSED OUT ON IN 2009

10- SCARS - Basement Jaxx Feat. Kelis, Meleka & Chipmunk - the title track from their latest album, one of their most accomplished productions to date

09- CROSS THE DANCEFLOOR (CHROMEO REMIX) - Treasure Fingers - while waiting to hear some more of those irresistable "future 80's" anthems from the Canadian duo, try this rather danceable number, it's as good as FANCY FOOTWORK I promise!

08- CHANSON D'AMOUR - Catherine Ferroyer-Blanchard - from her cassette (!!!) single out only in France, the only electro single I have fallen in love with last year plus my video of the year award goes to her too, J'adorrrrrre:

07- SPLITTING THE ATOM - Massive Attack - their most intricate and intriguing work since Mezzanine days...

06- MAXIMUS - Beni Feat. Sam Sparro - even better than BLACK & GOLD, a proper piece of dancefloor anthem that never was...

05- FEELINGS HAVE CHANGED - The New Sins - treasure of a song discovered by my friend Jaysin by 1/5th of New Young Pony Club & her side project, delicious & haunting

04- THE MUZIK - Ebony Bones - The M.I.A. of 2009, punk & disco never sounded more appealing 2gether, and while u're @ it try Yuksek Brondinski's phenomenal remix too

03- MOONLIGHT DANCE - Sally Shapiro - the cutest fragment of her sweet guilty pleasures...

02- MOSES - Elizabeth Fraser - the most anticipated come back in my personal books, the owner of England's most angelic of all voices and a masterpiece of a song blending sonic spices from all different directions to an impressive musical collage

***

01- GET IT RIGHT - Y.A.S. - produced by the scarily talented Monsieur Mirwais Ahmadzaï and sung by Lebanese underground diva Yasmine Hamdan it's as catchy as it gets, loved instantly by all my friends whom I've been feeding with it on regular basis the past 4 months... Video by Stephane Sednaoui partly shot in my favourite tea house in Cairo...
